THE BEST LEGGINGS FOR EVERY WORKOUT - AND BEYOND!
In the 70’s it was bellbottoms. In the 80’s we had shoulder pads. In the 90’s it was grunge, and in the 00’s we bedazzled our butts. This decade’s defining fashion trend: athleisure. And no item embodies the trend more than leggings.
We wear them to work out, to the grocery store, to pick our kids up from school, and even sometimes to work. (If we can get away with it.) The legging’s versatility is exactly what makes it so clutch. Finally, we have a comfortable and cute solution for almost every occasion! That said, finding exactly the right pair can be tough. Some leggings have too much stretch and end up bagging in the knees, others have too-narrow waistbands that create a muffin top no matter how toned you are. The worst offenders slowly slither down your torso, stopping about an inch below your butt crack, so you look like a plumber when you bend over and an Oompah Loompa when you stand up.
And they’re not cheap.
Nothing is more frustrating than dropping $100 on what you think will be a closet staple only to have it languish at the bottom of a drawer because it didn’t wear well. Over the years, I’ve whittled down my wardrobe to the five most durable, versatile pairs. These are the ones that wash well, don’t slip or stretch out, have pockets in all the right places, and most importantly, make my butt look amazing.
Here Are The 5 Best Leggings In My Closet:
Not only will these leggings last you at least five years, but they fit beautifully and have an iPhone-sized pocket on each leg. LuLu offers them in different fabrics every season, and the pair I have is in their aptly-named Naked Sensation material. It’s light as a feather and wicks sweat extremely effectively. I love them for outdoor workouts! My leggings are also full-length and black, so they’re perfect to throw on with a sweatshirt and rain boots on a messy day, or with a cute sweater or tee when I need to look presentable.
You’ve seen a million photos of me in these oxblood-colored cropped leggings for a reason: they’re what I actually wear for most of my workouts. Their mesh paneling keeps me cool and the Italian-made tech fabric lifts and smooths my butt and thighs in all the right places. They’re also the perfect high rise, hitting just above the belly button with a waistband that stays put without any unflattering pinch-and-roll effect. I’m also really impressed with the way they’ve laundered. I soak these in sweat at least twice a week, which means they get washed A LOT. After two years of heavy use, they still look brand new!
I’d been eyeing these leggings in black since Alo first launched this style, but when I saw the lavender color this spring, I couldn’t wait any longer! They’re so stylish that they translate more as pants than leggings, meaning I can wear them just about anywhere and still feel cute. The fabric is thick, but breathable, and isn’t slippery. I love these for yoga because my legs don’t slide against each other during bound poses, and they’re stylish enough to go straight from class to coffee with a friend.
At first, I was skeptical when I saw that these came with built-in underwear. With their stylish, hand-appliqued designs, I figured I’d want to wear these for more than just workouts, and I didn’t want to have to wash them when I hadn’t sweat in them. In the end, though, the undies ended up being their biggest selling point. They basically work as a bra for your butt, lifting and shaping it into a perfect peach. These are also true compression tights, which is why I love them for SoulCycle. I find my legs don’t tire as easily, and there’s something that feels strong and secure about the compression.
DISCLAIMER: These are the most expensive tights on my list, but they do go on sale. I highly recommend adding them to your Nordstrom’s wish list and signing up for Ultracor emails so you’ll be in the loop when they have a promotion.
I discovered Beyond Yoga a few years before I had James and fell in love with their incredibly soft Supplex fabric. Those were the years of the low waist, so I was able to continue wearing them throughout my pregnancy. I actually wore them to go for a walk while I was in labor! I was concerned they’d be stretched out after 9 months of wear on a growing body, but they snapped right back into shape! Which was a good thing because they were just as indispensable during that crazy first year as they had been while I was pregnant.
While my 6-year-old leggings are still going strong, I wanted to update them with a higher waist and one of Beyond Yoga’s adorable prints. I found this fun pair prior to leaving for Mexico and I wear them multiple times a week. They’re great for all kinds of workouts, and the print helps keep a tee-and-denim-jacket look from feeling too basic.
Do you have a specific brand or pair of leggings that you absolutely love? Tell me in comments! Extra points if they’re maternity or great for post-partum; I didn’t use either one so can’t really recommend one, and I know lots of new mamas would love some ideas!
