IMMUNE-BOOSTING HOT COCOA
It's November. And at our house, that means more than Thanksgiving and and holiday shopping. It means cold season.
As the parent of a preschooler, I'm extra vigilant about taking my supplements this time of year. There's only one thing worse than a sick kid who can't sleep: a sick mom who also can't sleep. Because let's face it ladies, if we go down, the whole ship goes down with us.
For me, supplementing is about more than just popping pills. It's about focusing on nutrient-dense foods with healing ingredients like adaptogens, herbs, and honey. Which is why I've created a delicious dose of prevention: Immune-Boosting Hot Cocoa.
Breaking Down The Ingredients
I shared my all-natural cold-fighting elixir during last winter's scary flu season, but this year I'm upping my game with this healing hot cocoa. Here's a little bit about the ingredients:
These adaptogenic 'shrooms supposedly boost immunity and energy, both of which are in short supply when you're feeling under the weather. These taste bitter on their own, so they're best mixed into other things...like hot cocoa. I like the reishi mushrooms from Organic Mushroom Nutrition because they're well-priced and readily available.
Cacao supercharges other ingredients it's mixed with. So it not only balances the mushrooms' bitterness, but also to make them more effective.
Naturally antimicrobial honey not only fights germs in the throat, it also helps soothe and repair irritated tissue. Hence why it's such an effective sore throat remedy.
Collagen is a powerful gut healer. What's more, the gut is a key gatekeeper when it comes to keeping out harmful germs. So it's a good idea to take extra care of it during cold season. Collagen is also tasteless and dissolves completely in warm liquid, so it's absolutely undetectable in this hot cocoa.
I love hot cocoa with regular milk, but dairy = mucus. And when you're sick, the last thing you need is more snot. Cashew milk is my hands-down favorite nut milk because of its creamy texture, making for a rich, smooth cup of cocoa.
